obile applications and wireless technologies are changing at a very drastic rate such that organizations should plan and adopt them well ahead of time. Its up to the architects and planners to keep abreast of the latest developments in this field and define mobile strategies. These technologies will have a larger impact on customers as well as their own employees.

As per Gartner report the following are the upcoming technologies that are going to impact every organization in 2013 and beyond. There are many technologies in offer, but below are the most important ones.


1. HTML5

HTML or Hyper Text Markup language is the core technology of the Internet and used for presenting internet content. The 4th version of HTML was released on  1997 and the fifth generation is still under development.

HTML5 is strongly supported by most mobile companies like Apple, Microsoft, Google and Research in Motion (RIM). HTML5 is already available on the browsers of many new smartphones and tablets and its expected to displace proprietary technologies such as Flash and Silverlight. Currently native applications are dominating Mobile applications. HTML5 will enhance this and cause a shift in architecture from Native to hybrid or web approaches. A complete shift is not expected, as JavaScript is still not able to support many underlying platform specific features. Further the lower end phones wont support HTML5.

2. NFC

NFC or Near Field Communication is a wireless connectivity technology using radio communication that enables convenient short-range communication between electronic devices by touching them together or bringing them into close proximity, usually few centimeters.

By 2015, nearly 30% or more of all mobile handsets shipped globally will include NFC.  At the same time, consumer applications will evolve encompassing NFC. Customer facing industries like retail, travel, marketing, events etc will more exploit its uses. NFC will evolve as a touch-to-act technology, which could be used for smart posters, discounts tokens, mobile tickets, authentication and check-in to location, based services.

3. Platform Independent Application Development (AD) Tools

Platform independent development refers to write once run anywhere applications. Currently a mobile application need to be rewritten in multiple platforms like android, windows , apple ios to support native interactions and services to support different mobile sets.

As the competition is increasing there would be multiple smartphone players between three and five having significant market share.  In this scenario, creating and maintaining multiple platform apps will become expensive. To be cost effective there is a constant urge to have tools that can convert a single code to be converted to different platforms. Currently there are multiple tools available offering similar options, but there is a long mile to go to cover the entire spectrum and features of mobile applications. If not “write one run anywhere”, at least “write 80% and customize 20%” would be a very achievable objective and cost effective.

4. Location and context

One key derivative of mobile application over conventional applications is its ability to use location as an input parameter in providing contextual services based on locations. For example a nearby restaurant search based on specific location where the customer is standing.

Over the years through 2015, consumer facing organizations are likely to make effective use of context based systems. Context based systems will evolve in combining location and contextual services like individual needs, social networking, sensor information and many other clues to suggest appropriate offers and services. This will also become a standard feature in employee facing systems.

5. Bluetooth 4

Bluetooth is a wireless connection technology allowing data communication between fixed and mobile devices creating secure private personal area networks. In comparison to NFC, Bluetooth has been in market for longer years and comes with more bandwidth and coverage area spanning to several meters.

Bluetooth 4 aims at low energy (LE) operation allowing mobile handsets to talk to wide range of low-power peripherals and sensors. Within the next 2-3 years more number of handsets will adopt Bluetooth 4. Many other peripheral devices and accessories will be adopting this and will pose to create new business models.  Also more mobile accessories will use the mobile device as a channel to communicate to cloud services.

6. 802.11ac

802.11ac, the emerging wireless computer-networking standard (currently under development) from the IEEE that is a faster and more scalable version of 802.11n. 802.11ac couples the freedom of wireless with the capabilities of Gigabit Ethernet. It is planned to take Wi-Fi performance to 1 GBPS levels.

802.11ac and other new Wi-Fi standards such as 802.11ad (60 GHz, multi­Gbps in­room Wi­Fi) and 802.11ah (low­ frequency Wi­Fi), will continue to expand the capabilities of the Wi­Fi family of technologies. The strong Wi­Fi road map will enable it to address new application areas such as high­definition video streaming telemetry and offloading traffic from cellular networks. 802.11ac is likely to be officially approved around 2013 while pre-standard equipment will become available before that.

Wi-fi will merge as a key technology for a wide range of consumer electronics and will be popular domestic applications. Enterprises will replace more wired networks with Wi-Fi and also need to increase their Wi-Fi capacity to support consumerization and employee-owned IT.

7. Machine to Machine (M2M) and Smart products

Wireless connectivity is rapidly expanding beyond traditional mobile devices to a new generation of connected products for consumer electronics and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. M2M is about enabling the flow of data between machines and machines and ultimately machines and people. Regardless of the type of machine or data, information usually flows in the same general way from a machine over a network, and then through a gateway to a system where it can be reviewed and acted on.

M2M wireless will be implemented using a range of protocols and bearers, including cellular, Wi­Fi, ZigBee and Dash7. M2M will enable a wide range of smart networked products and business opportunities such as converting ownership to pay­as­you­use models. Wireless M2M will comprise a substantial proportion of the future “Internet of things”. Currently many M2M combinations exist and occupies 10% of some cellular networks total subscribers. In the long term, machines will outnumber human cellular subscribers.

8. Augmented Reality (AR)

Augmented reality (AR) is the process of using computer generated data such as graphics, GPS data, video and sound to augment the physical real-word environment. AR blurs the line between what’s real and what’s computer-generated by enhancing what we see, hear, feel and smell. AR overlays information onto a real-time video of the world (usually displayed on a smartphone or tablet). This can take the form of tagging objects in view with information, or overlaying more complex video and gaming animation onto world views.

AR will continue to evolve for at least five years. Vendors and tools such as Aurasma, Layar, Wikitude and Qualcomm’s AR toolkit are already used to create sophisticated AR experiences. Through 2015, consumer­grade AR is likely to be most useful for marketing and gaming purposes, although nonhandset applications such as head­up displays in cars have potential. There are still challenges to overcome like significant processing power and sensors to indicate handset location and attitude. Currently its a very proprietary technology, and is unlikely to become standardized and embedded in Web browsers for at least five years.


9. Multiplatform MDM

Mobile Device Management (MDM) software helps an organization to see and control the mobile devices entering their enterprise, whether they are provided by the company or part of a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program. It helps with real management capabilities, including convenient configuration, self-service tools, and enhanced protection.

The challenges of managing employee devices are compounded by the fact that knowledge workers typically use at least three different mobile devices (e.g., smartphones, laptops and tablets), not all of which are owned by the enterprise. Therefore, enterprises must be prepared with multiplatform MDM tools to manage and secure a wide range of devices, some of which they don’t own. Current MDM is immature and technologies in offer are proprietary and seldom interoperate. Consolidation is inevitable in this field.

10. LTE

Long Term Evolution (LTE) or 4G LTE, is a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals. LTE is a next generation cellular wireless technology that pushes peak theoretical speeds to hundreds of megabits per second and reduces latency. LTE will be adopted by code division multiple access (CDMA) and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network operators.

LTE will be a widely adopted network in years to come. Initially it will be more useful for corporate PC and tablet users needing high data rates and low latency like mobile web applications. Once its becomes more widely available and the rates coming down, it will enable a high data rate cellular applications including video and fixed broadband replacement and high performance M2M devices.
